Ruturaj Gaikwad to the broadcaster: “The game plan was pretty simple. The wicket was on the slower side, so I took my time to get in. I have not batted with him (Conway), but I have spent a lot of time with him. Whatever I wanted from him, I was pretty upfront. It (the pitch) was a bit slower, but I feel if you get set, you can score here. I was trying to maintain the balance, so I tried to be neutral. It’s pretty much usual, the thought process was on being focused on the process. I am pretty confident we will defend.”

7:07PM: “You will definitely see me in the yellow jersey [next year], whether this yellow jersey or some other yellow jersey, that’s a different thing” – there we go!

TOSS: SRH wins toss, opts to bowl

MS Dhoni:  “You will definitely see me in the yellow jersey [next year], whether this yellow jersey or some other yellow jersey, that’s a different thing. The kind of catches we have dropped are not the ones you can practise. With the ball, we don’t want to bowl big overs, 18 runs is okay but not 24-25 runs. We have a couple of changes: Bravo is not fit, Shivam is out. Conway and Simarjeet Singh come in.”

Kane Williamson: We are going to bowl first. For us we have done it something well, we’ll try to make use of the conditions with the ball. It was a close game, today is another opportuntiy as a team. We are playing with the same team.

TOSS coming up. MS Dhoni and Kane Williamson are at the centre.

6:55PM: PITCH REPORT from Deep Dasgupta – We are playing on the same pitch that was used a couple of nights ago. It turned out to be a slow track, it was difficult for the batters to time when the bowlers were on the slower side. It was gripping and the pitch was spongy – but today, the grass has been shaved off and the soil has been rolled, so there will not be spongy bounce and there might be less grip, it isn’t as abrasive either and so should come to the bat better. Batting first might not be a bad idea.

Visuals from the ground have MS Dhoni stepping out for his customary warm-ups. Can Dhoni rekindle the season for Chennai from here?

6:37PM: MSD fans begin to take charge at the MCA Stadium.

5:56PM: Chennai cannot afford the cushion of another loss in its playoffs bid. Dhoni will need individuals in the side to step up in unison. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s form is a major concern for a side that has missed the solidity of Faf du Plessis at the top. CSK might have a boost in Moeen Ali’s return to the scheme of things tonight.

5:43PM: Thala returns to the helm.

4:42PM: The mantle of captaincy seemed to have bogged down Ravindra Jadeja. Can he redeem himself quickly as CSK attempts to stay alive in the playoffs race? Also, is the Super Kings walking backwards with MS Dhoni’s return as skipper? Lots to ponder in the upcoming days for the defending champion.

It may have entered the Indian Premier League’s 2022 edition as the defending champion. But for a better part of its campaign so far, Chennai Super Kings has hardly shown any signs of being a champion outfit.

Languishing towards the bottom of the table – with just two wins from eight games so far – MS Dhoni’s men will definitely know that their last crack towards the title defence will have to begin against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Maharashtra Cricket Association’s International Stadium on Sunday night.

Dhoni to lead CSK in IPL 2022 after Jadeja hands back captaincy

Dale Steyn credits IPL for India’s pace revolution

Besides a misfiring top-order, lack of wicket-taking bowlers has haunted the Super Kings so far. It will be interesting to see if Matheesha Pathirana, the slinging pacer from Sri Lanka, is handed a debut during the southern Indian derby.

The Super Kings will also be looking forward to Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mukesh Choudhary, the two Maharashtra boys in its line-up, to put up an inspiring performance on their home ground. While opener Gaikwad has had a largely quiet season so far, left-arm pacer Choudhary has been one of the bright spots in the Super Kings campaign so far.

While Super Kings will be looking forward to unleashing their firepower against the best pace quartet of the tournament, the Sunrisers will be hoping to bounce back after a disappointing loss against Gujarat Titans in its last outing.

Kane Williamson and Co. couldn’t have asked for a better opponent than CSK to resurrect its campaign. After all, on the back of two losses at the start of its campaign, it was the face-off against Super Kings that kickstarted the Sunrisers’ five-match winning streak.

Can the Sunrisers maintain a clean slate against the Super Kings? Over to Sunday night!
